Blocking unwanted calls and texts March 16 2016, 0 Comments

Just because you’ve got a phone doesn’t mean you’re open to receiving each and every phone call or text. There are some people you just don’t want to hear from at all, but that presents a challenge.

Once someone has got your number, they can make as many calls or texts to it as they wish, which can get so bad as to force you to change your number. That’s on the extreme level, though, when perhaps you’re feeling unsafe, but there are simpler ways to block these calls and texts.

Block phone calls

There are a few ways to block unwanted phone calls: at the system level, network level or through apps. The first is the easiest, and it only requires a device with the capability to block specific phone calls. For Samsung, these are the steps to take:

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Select More
  3. Go to Settings, then Call blocking
  4. Then add the numbers you want barred and even add a personalized message

If your device can’t block calls, you can always contact your network through their website or give them a phone call. Most network providers will allow you to block specific numbers, although that may require an additional charge.

If none of the above are available, make use of the offerings on the Play Store. You may be surprised by the number of call blocking apps on the App Store, which shows just how much of an issue this is.

Among the most popular of these apps include Mr. Number, Call Control, Call Blocker and Blacklist. All these provide blocking for both phone calls and texts, but only Call Control and Mr. Number have community support. This provides a resource for known spam callers who keep making inappropriate calls, therefore, you will be a step ahead.

Block SMSs

The same apps that block phone calls will usually block texts too, but if your device can block phone calls by default, a specific SMS blocker may be your solution. One such app is SMS Blocker, but with one problem, you may have to make it your default SMS app for it to work.

For the unknowns

The above apps require that you know who’s calling or texting, but what about those numbers you don’t know? Truecaller is a very popular app that uses people’s contacts to identify callers. Its popularity makes it very useful because of its very huge database of names and numbers. That doesn’t say that it recognizes every number on earth, but you can identify at least 75% of your unknown callers.
